NLB MakeIT vs PrintYa: library 3D printing or a print service?
MakeIT is free to use once you are an NLB member, but it is do-it-yourself: complete the 3D Printing Starter Session to get certified, book a 2.5-hour slot up to three weeks ahead at one of four libraries — they are often fully booked, so plan ahead — then operate the printer and clean up yourself. PrintYa starts from S$8: you send one STL, 3MF or OBJ file, a person reviews it, and you get a confirmed quote within one business day. Choose MakeIT to learn, or for free hobby printing with time to spare. Choose PrintYa when you already have a file and want the print done for you.

What NLB MakeIT is
MakeIT is the National Library Board's free makerspace programme. It offers 3D printers (currently Bambu Lab machines) and other equipment at Jurong, Tampines, Woodlands, and Punggol libraries, for ages 13 and above. It is a genuinely good way to learn 3D printing without buying a machine.
What it takes to print at MakeIT
- Be an NLB member (membership is free) aged 13 or above.
- Complete the 3D Printing Starter Session — it unlocks the certification you need to book the printers.
- Book a 2.5-hour slot, up to three weeks in advance, one booking at a time — they are popular and often fully booked, so book early.
- Prepare your file (their machines use Bambu Studio) and bring whatever the booking asks for.
- Travel to the library, operate the printer yourself, and clean up after.
How PrintYa is different
PrintYa is a small Singapore printing service for people who already have a model file. You send one STL, 3MF or OBJ file, we check it by hand, and we reply with the price and next steps within one business day. Nothing is charged or printed until you approve the Final Quote. Collection is by appointment, and Singapore courier is quoted separately.
When to choose which
- Choose MakeIT if you want to learn how 3D printing works, enjoy DIY, have flexible weekday-evening or weekend time, and don't mind booking ahead — slots fill up fast.
- Choose PrintYa if you have a finished file, want it printed properly without certification or slots, or need someone to check whether your model will actually print before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Is NLB MakeIT really free?
Yes, workshops and materials are free for NLB members. What you pay with is time: complete the 3D Printing Starter Session, book a 2.5-hour slot, then operate the printer yourself.
Do I need my own 3D printer to use MakeIT?
No. The libraries provide the printers and PLA. You bring your model file, complete the certification, and operate the machine during your booked slot.
How fast can PrintYa print my file?
We aim to reply with a confirmed quote within one business day. Accepted prints typically take 2–4 business days after verified payment; unusual jobs receive a confirmed date.
What if my model doesn't fit a library printer?
PrintYa accepts one STL, 3MF or OBJ file up to 50 MB within a 256 × 256 × 256 mm envelope, and a person checks printability before quoting.
