3D printing in Johor Bahru vs Singapore: which is better?

If you live in Singapore and already have one printable file, Johor Bahru can be worth comparing — especially if you are already crossing the border or a provider gives you a clearly lower all-in price. But an RM quote is not the same as your final cost: travel time, courier, handling and Singapore import steps may sit outside it. PrintYa is the simpler local option for a one-off: small prints from S$8, a person reviews one STL, 3MF or OBJ file, and we aim to reply with a quote within one business day. Nothing is charged until you approve the Final Quote. Use the table below to compare the full cost, timing and handover — not just the headline price.

Why the JB headline price can be misleading

Johor Bahru pricing is not one standard market rate. For example, Inventadore's published Johor Bahru service page lists a 10% support-material cleanup charge unless you opt out, plus a RM10 startup fee when an object's unit price is below RM20. 3D Forger's Johor Bahru page advertises small parts from RM10 and an average 3–5 day delivery time in Johor Bahru. These are examples from individual providers, not a promise about every JB shop.

Before comparing currencies, ask for the same file to be priced with the same material, colour, quality, support removal and quantity. Then ask whether the quote includes a minimum order, startup fee, delivery to Singapore, customs clearance, GST or any redelivery risk. If a provider will only quote after reviewing the file, that is normal — a per-gram or starting price is not the Final Quote.

Cross-border courier: check the route and extra charges

If a finished print is sent from JB to Singapore by land or sea courier, do not assume the air-parcel S$400 relief rules apply. Singapore Customs' current courier table says non-dutiable, non-controlled goods delivered by land or sea can be subject to GST and an in-payment permit even when the CIF value is S$400 or below. Customs also says service providers may charge separate shipping, handling, clearance, permit-application or disbursement fees.

The exact treatment depends on the shipment and its classification, so ask the provider or courier to state the delivery mode and all expected charges in writing. If you collect in JB yourself, the courier rules are not the whole picture; you are still making a cross-border trip through the Singapore–Malaysia land route. ICA lists Tuas and Woodlands as Singapore land checkpoints and provides a traffic hotline, so check current conditions before setting a collection appointment.

When Johor Bahru may make sense

When a Singapore service is simpler

That is the role of PrintYa: upload one file, receive a human-reviewed quote targeted within one business day, and decide only after you know the price. If the file is within the public limits and PLA is suitable, send it for a quote.

A fair comparison checklist

  1. Send the same model file and state its finished dimensions.
  2. Specify PLA, colour, quantity and the finish you expect.
  3. Ask what the quote includes: supports, cleanup, minimums, setup, packing and delivery.
  4. Get the earliest ready date, not only the number of days for printing.
  5. For cross-border delivery, ask who is the importer and who pays GST, permits or clearance fees.
  6. Compare the final amount and handover plan with the local PrintYa quote, which is confirmed before payment.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3D printing in Johor Bahru cheaper than Singapore?

Sometimes the Johor Bahru quote looks lower in Malaysian ringgit, but there is no universal answer. Compare the complete cost: print, material, support cleanup, minimum or startup fees, travel or courier, any import charges, and the value of your time. A local Singapore quote can be simpler even when its headline price is higher.

Will I pay GST if a JB print is couriered to Singapore?

It depends on the shipment method, declared value, goods classification and how the courier handles clearance. Singapore Customs says non-dutiable, non-controlled goods delivered by land or sea can be subject to GST and an in-payment permit even when CIF value is S$400 or below. Ask the provider or courier for a written all-in breakdown before paying.

Is it worth crossing the border for one 3D print?

It can be if you are already going to Johor Bahru, the provider is convenient, and the saving remains meaningful after transport and time. For a one-off print from Singapore, a local service avoids a separate cross-border trip; compare the all-in total and promised handover date rather than the RM quote alone.

What does PrintYa accept?

PrintYa accepts one STL, 3MF or OBJ file per enquiry, up to 50 MB, within a maximum 256 × 256 × 256 mm model envelope. The service is PLA only. A person checks the file and confirms the actual price before anything is charged.

How quickly does PrintYa reply?

The usual quotation target is within one business day. After you approve the Final Quote and payment is independently verified, typical accepted production is 2–4 business days; unusual work receives a confirmed date.

Do I have to pay PrintYa before the file is checked?

No. Send the file for review, receive the Final Quote, and decide whether to approve it. Nothing is charged and printing does not start until you approve the quote.
